The Mouth-Gut Connection: How Oral Health Influences Gut Health

Posted .

Our body functions as an interconnected system, and the relationship between oral health and gut health is a clear example of this, among others. The mouth is the entry point to the GI (gastrointestinal) tract, and the microorganisms that inhabit the mouth can influence the entire digestive system.

The oral cavity contains hundreds of bacterial species which, under healthy conditions, exist in balance or symbiosis. However, poor oral hygiene, gum disease or untreated dental infections can disrupt this balance, known as dysbiosis. Harmful bacteria from the mouth are continuously swallowed with saliva, and can reach the gut, where they may alter the intestinal microbial balance.

This imbalance has been associated with conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and even metabolic disorders. Chronic inflammation from dental infections can also raise certain inflammatory mediators in the body, which may affect the gut integrity.

Conversely, gut health also influences oral health. Nutritional deficiencies, altered immunity and systemic inflammation linked to gut disorders may increase susceptibility to oral infections, delayed healing and mucosal changes.

Maintaining oral hygiene, through regular brushing, flossing and professional dental care – supports not only the health of teeth and gums, but also a balanced gut. Similarly, a diet rich in fiber, probiotics and nutrients promotes both oral and gut health. In essence, protecting one helps protect the other, reinforcing the importance of a holistic approach to health.
