Do’s and Don’ts After Tooth Extraction

Posted .

After a tooth is removed, your body starts a natural healing process. A blood clot forms in the empty socket, which protects the bone and nerves underneath. Proper care helps this clot stay in place and allows the area to heal quickly and predictably.

Do’s

Keep pressure on the area

Bite gently on the gauze given by your dentist for 30–60 minutes. This helps stop bleeding and allows a blood clot to form.

Keep your mouth clean, but be gentle

Brush your other teeth as usual. After 24 hours, rinse gently with salt water to keep the area clean without disturbing the clot.

Use cold packs for swelling

Apply an ice pack to the outside of your face for 15–20 minutes at a time during the first day. This helps reduce swelling and pain.

Take medicines as prescribed

Use painkillers or antibiotics exactly as instructed by the dentist.

Eat soft foods

Choose foods like yogurt, soup, mashed potatoes, or smoothies. Good nutrition helps your body heal.

Rest well

Take it easy for the first day. Keep your head slightly elevated when lying down to reduce bleeding and swelling.

Don’ts

Do not touch the extraction site

Avoid poking the area with your fingers or tongue. This can disturb the blood clot.

Do not rinse or spit forcefully for 24 hours

Strong rinsing or spitting can pull out the clot and cause a painful condition called dry socket.

Do not smoke or use tobacco

Smoking slows healing and greatly increases the risk of infection and dry socket.

Do not drink alcohol

Alcohol can interfere with healing and react with medications.

Do not do heavy exercise

Strenuous activity can restart bleeding and increase swelling.

Do not apply heat on the first day

Heat can increase swelling. Use cold packs instead during the early stage.

Good healing after tooth extraction depends on protecting the blood clot, keeping the mouth clean, and avoiding activities that slow recovery. If you experience severe pain, increasing swelling, fever, or a bad taste or smell, contact the dentist promptly.
