Smoking and Your Oral Health: The Facts

Posted .

Would it surprise you to learn that smoking isn’t great for your health? While you probably knew that, did you know smoking can actually impact your oral health as well? Of course, you could choose between traditional cigarettes and e-cigarettes, but did you know that each of these options can actually lead to several issues?

Smoking traditional cigarettes can yellow and stain your teeth and might lead to chronic bad breath. However, did you know that smoking tobacco will also leave you more vulnerable to different oral infections and diseases? In fact, if you smoke, you could actually be more vulnerable to problems such as gum disease, tooth decay, oral cancer, and even tooth loss. If left untreated, each of these issues could lead to other serious problems.

E-cigarettes can also cause a number of problems with your oral health. Unfortunately, e-cigarettes will make you more vulnerable to gum disease. In fact, smoking cigarettes can also make your gums pink, red, swollen, sensitive or tender—which are all common signs of gum disease. In other words, these symptoms could actually mask signs of gum disease, which can let your gum disease become more serious. E-cigarettes might also reduce your saliva production, which can ultimately lead to dry mouth. Again, dry mouth can cause several dental issues, such as gum disease, tooth decay, and bad breath.
