How to Avoid Enamel Erosion

Posted .

Did you know that your enamel is actually very strong? In fact, your enamel is one of the hardest substances in your whole body. However, even though your enamel is quite tough, it can still soften and erode. Fortunately, there are a number of things you can do to recognize weakened enamel and a few steps you can take to avoid the issue altogether.

Naturally, you should remember to brush your pearly whites at least twice a day for two minutes at a time twice a day. However, even though you should keep your smile clean, would you be surprised to hear that you should wait at least thirty minutes before you brush? Once you eat–especially after you eat starchy or sugary foods–your enamel will be weakened. After thirty minutes, your enamel will harden again and you’ll be able to brush your teeth safely.

Unfortunately, if you brush while your enamel is soft, you might actually harm your teeth. Sadly, if your teeth are yellowed or are transparent, you could be suffering from weakened enamel. Different medications might also be harmful to your enamel. If you think your enamel is weakened, we suggest calling Lavista Park Family Dentistry at (770)-939-5122.
